The modern day goalkeeper is no longer evaluated by his shot stopping ability. The importance of distributing the ball, possession, technical skill and playing in behind a high defending line is becoming more evident.
How the Best Goalkeepers Are Ranked
The ranking is based on recent form, contribution over the years, reputation, level of competition and individual contribution and standing of backing. All statistics are considered, as well as overall performances, and domestic and international trophies.
1. Thibaut Courtois
Thibaut Courtois is leading the way in his elite Real Madrid form. He has become a hero on major occasions like the Champions League final of 2022 due to his long-range shot stopping ability. Despite some challenging years, he had a crucial season in 2024-25, helping PSG to claim the Champions League for the first time. He was later transferred to Manchester City where he again made a positive impact in his ability to stop shots.
4. Joan García
Joan García was much sought-after by Arsenal, but ultimately he made his way to Barcelona. The young Spaniard has given his own countrymen a bit of excitement with his shot stopping abilities, high ball and playing the sweeper. His adaptation has proved to be a big positive for Barcelona.
5. Alisson Becker
Since joining Liverpool in 2018, Alisson Becker has been a success story. He is a mixture of the two types of keepers and the contemporary sweeper-keeper and has helped Liverpool to their Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup success.
6. Mike Maignan
Mike Maignan made a strong impression when he made his debut as AC Milan’s first choice goalkeeper. His performances have helped to secure Milan’s 2021-22 scudetto and he is regarded as one of the best Italian goalkeepers. He’s also succeeded Hugo Lloris as France’s No.1 since the former had retired.
7. Unai Simón
Unai Simón is a sure-shot and has a feel for the ball as well. He has been a crucial player for Athletic Club’s defense and has made a significant impact on Spain’s success in the Nations League, Euro 2024, and World Cup 2026.
8. Mile Svilar
From his bad childhood days in Benfica, Mile Svilar has seen a significant improvement. Joined Roma and after a bumpy start made his first appearance in the starting 11 and was a reliable and good goalkeeper. Won ‘Best goalkeeper in Serie A’ in 24-25 and 25-26 seasons.
9. Emiliano Martínez
Emiliano Martínez’ career took a turn for the worse when he joined Aston Villa. He soon proved to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and was Argentina’s No.1 keeper and was instrumental in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup and Copa América success. He also has a Yashin Trophy winner’s record of two.
10. Gregor Kobel
Gregor Kobel now makes his home with the Swiss team as No.1 goalkeeper with Yann Sommer having been replaced. The Borussia Dortmund star has been a key figure in their Champions League journey this season, helping the team reach the final in 2023–24 as well as his excellent reflexes.
11. Marco Carnesecchi

The modern goalkeeper position was revolutionized by Manuel Neuer, and he is still one of the top sweeper-keepers in football. Although he is still in the later years of his career, he still plays at a high level for Bayern Munich and is still a big name in front of the posts.
15. Bart Verbruggen
Bart Verbruggen is another young goalkeeper picked up by Brighton’s far-reaching scouting radar. He adjusted to English football, and emerged as Brighton’s undisputed starter and the Netherlands No.1. More is to be expected based on his growth.
16. Gerónimo Rulli

In addition, his classy goalkeeping skills have proved to be vital for Lazio.
18. Diogo Costa
Diogo Costa is the goalkeeper of the present day, with a solid shot-stopping career coupled with a ball-handling prowess. The Porto captain is particularly impressive when it comes to penalties, where he’s on his instinct and reads his taker.
19. Jordan Pickford
Jordan Pickford has improved considerably as a goalkeeper from a few years ago when he had been the subject of much scorn. He is still valuable at the ball and his exploits for England and Everton only reinforce his reputation for that. He has been a key player in Everton’s efforts to stave relegation woes as well.
20. Yann Sommer
Yann Sommer was a member of Inter’s winning team when he joined from Bayern Munich. The Swiss’s three-year tenure at Inter was capped off with yet another Serie A trophy but he still maintained his high standards of performance. He is now with Club Brugge.
21. Matz Sels
M Nottingham Forest’s Matz Sels, who had only made his debut in the Champions League a few days ago, proved to be a superb signing. The Belgian arrived in January 2024 and was a significant factor in Forest’s Europa League qualification success and in the 2024-25 season won the Golden Glove with David Raya.
22. Vanja Milinković-Savić
Vanja Milinković-Savić is a rising star in the Serie A goalkeeping. He has been noted for his shot-stopping skills and penalty saves, and had impressive clean-sheet numbers at Torino before joining reigning champions Napoli.
23. Robin Roefs
Robin Roefs joined Sunderland when he was promoted with little senior experience and was able to take on the challenges of the job. He has established himself as a player who can play an important role in the goal box as well as on the ball, and has become a distributor.
24. Uğurcan Çakır
Uğurcan Çakır was supposed to replace Fernando Muslera at Galatasaray, but it was a huge challenge for him. The deal with Trabzonspor was an unprecedented one, Çakır was acquired for a massive fee and he has been a brilliant addition to the team, making him the highest-paid goalkeeper in Türkiye.
25. Jean Butez
Jean Butez was an integral part of the remarkable ascendance of Como. Butez became one of the best Italian keepers when the club finished fourth in Serie A in 2026. He enjoyed an outstanding 2025–26 campaign, keeping 19 clean sheets and conceding just 28 goals in 38 matches.
