In the autumn of the 2000-01 season, the established left-back Sylvinho suffered an injury, and Cole took the chance to establish himself in the first team. He kept the place even after Sylvinho recovered, and he remained first choice for the rest of his Arsenal career.

Cole left Arsenal for Chelsea on 31 August 2006, in a deal worth 5 million pounds plus the transfer of William Gallas to Arsenal. The move followed a tapping-up case in 2005, when Cole was fined by the Premier League for meeting Chelsea officials without informing Arsenal. The fine was reduced to 75,000 pounds on appeal. Some Arsenal supporters gave him the nickname Cashley, and the transfer angered many fans of his boyhood club.

Cole made his Chelsea debut on 9 September 2006 as a substitute for Wayne Bridge in a 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic. He scored his first Chelsea goal on 1 March 2008, the fourth goal in a 4-0 away win over West Ham United. A serious knee injury in January 2007 kept him out for several weeks, and a fractured left ankle in February 2010 kept him out for three months. In the 2010-11 season he started all 38 league games for Chelsea.

His greatest season at Chelsea was 2011-12. He won the seventh FA Cup of his career when Chelsea beat Liverpool 2-1 in the 2012 final. In the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, he made a goal-line clearance that helped Chelsea win the tie, and in the final against Bayern Munich on 19 May 2012 he scored in the penalty shoot-out as Chelsea won a first European title. The following season he played in the 2-1 win over Benfica in the 2013 Europa League final.

In the 2013-14 season, Cesar Azpilicueta replaced Cole as the first-choice left-back. Cole captained the team in his last Chelsea match, a 2-1 away win over Cardiff City. Head coach Sigi Schmid named Cole as captain ahead of the 2018 season. The Galaxy missed the play-offs in 2017 and 2018, and Cole was released at the end of the 2018 season. He made 94 appearances in all competitions for LA Galaxy and scored three goals.

Derby County

Cole joined Championship side Derby County on 21 January 2019, reuniting with manager Frank Lampard, his former team-mate at Chelsea and with England. His appearance against the United States on 12 June 2010 was his 79th cap, and when he played against Algeria later that month he passed the record of 79 caps by a black English international, held by John Barnes. England went out in the second round, losing 4-1 to Germany. In October 2010 he won his 86th cap against Montenegro, and he was voted England Player of the Year for 2010 by the fans.

Managerial Career

After retiring from playing, Cole became a coach at Derby County, then followed Frank Lampard to Chelsea, where he worked as an academy coach. On 27 July 2021 he was named assistant coach of the England Under-21 team under head coach Lee Carsley, combining the role with his work at Chelsea.

On 3 February 2022 he joined Everton as a first-team coach, again working under Lampard. He left Everton on 23 January 2023 when Lampard left the club. In October 2023 he joined Birmingham City as a first-team coach under Wayne Rooney. He left Birmingham in September 2024 to join the Football Association on a full-time basis, and he also assisted Carsley during his spell as interim head coach of the England senior team in 2024.

With the England Under-21 team, Cole helped the side win back-to-back European Under-21 Championship titles in 2023 and 2025. He stepped away from the Under-21 coaching role in 2026. On 15 March 2026 he became head coach of Serie B side Cesena, his first senior head coach job, on a short-term contract to the end of the season. He won one of eight matches in charge and stepped down in June 2026.

Playing Style

Cole was an attacking left-back who combined pace and stamina with strong one-on-one defending. At Arsenal, his link-up play with Robert Pires and Thierry Henry made him a constant attacking outlet down the left flank. Under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, his attacking threat was restrained, and he focused more on defending and marking, an area of his game that improved greatly during his time at the club.

He was renowned for timed goal-line clearances and for cutting out danger at the last moment. He made two vital clearances in the 2011-12 Champions League run, against Napoli in the round of 16 and against Barcelona in the semi-final. His duels with Cristiano Ronaldo were among the most watched individual matchups of the era, and Cole was one of the few full-backs who could consistently contain the Portuguese winger.

His main weakness was his attacking output in terms of goals. He scored only 21 goals in 702 club matches and never scored for England. His consistency, positioning and reading of the game more than made up for that, and he stayed at the top level for almost 20 years.
