LaLiga Weekend Goes Ahead With Tributes for Jesus de Miguel as Atletico vs Barcelona Tops the Fixtures
LaLiga weekend goes ahead as planned from 6 to 9 November, with Atletico Madrid against Barcelona and Valencia against Real Madrid heading a round that will honour Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel at every stadium. LaLiga, the RFEF and Liga F confirmed on Thursday that the fixtures will be played, despite a formal request from the players union AFE to suspend the weekend round after the death of de Miguel.
The decision brings an end to two days of uncertainty around the Matchday 12 programme. AFE asked for all matches in the top two tiers to be called off until 9 November, but the governing bodies decided that the round will go ahead with tributes, and only four matches linked directly to de Miguel and his former club Castellon will be postponed.
LaLiga Confirms Weekend Fixtures Go Ahead
The confirmation came in a joint statement from the RFEF, LaLiga and Liga F on Thursday afternoon. The three bodies said that Spanish football will pay tribute to de Miguel during the forthcoming round of fixtures, under the message Siempre En Nuestro Recuerdo, which means Always in Our Thoughts.
The statement said that the three institutions, together with the clubs and the players, agreed on a series of initiatives so that Spanish football as a whole can honour the memory of de Miguel in unity at every stadium. The decision followed a request from AFE, which said that players did not believe that the psychological and human conditions existed to play normally after the death of a fellow professional.
AFE president David Aganzo attended the burial of de Miguel in Navahermosa on Thursday and backed the position of the union. The governing bodies decided instead that the tribute will reach every level of Spanish football through a matchday played in memory of the striker.
Tributes for Jesus de Miguel at Every Stadium

A minute silence will be observed before each game that goes ahead this weekend. The referee will also stop play at the first interruption after the ninth minute, in recognition of the number nine shirt that de Miguel wore for Tenerife.
The tribute will extend beyond the top flight. The minute silence will also be observed at all national competitions organised by the RFEF and Liga F that take place on the same dates. On Saturday 7 November at 6:00 p.m. Canary Islands time, which is 7:00 p.m. on the Spanish mainland, Tenerife will hold a formal tribute in memory of the player at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez, open to all supporters.
Las Palmas, the main rivals of Tenerife, will play the fixture against Eldense on Sunday in blue and white colours, traditionally worn by Tenerife, as a tribute to de Miguel.
Three Postponed Matches in the Second Tier
Three fixtures in LaLiga Hypermotion have been postponed: Castellon against Eibar, Granada against Tenerife and Andorra against Mallorca. LaLiga accepted a request from Castellon to postpone the match against Eibar, after de Miguel spent two and a half years at Castellon before moving to Tenerife in 2025.
Liga F will also postpone the match between Costa Adeje Tenerife and Deportivo Alaves. The rearranged dates for the postponed matches will be announced in due course. The two Segunda Division matches involving Tenerife and Andorra were already postponed earlier in the week, and the latest decision adds Castellon against Eibar to the list.
Funeral in Navahermosa Brings Spanish Football Together
The funeral of de Miguel took place on Thursday in the village of Navahermosa. Family, friends and teammates gathered to remember the striker, who died on Tuesday morning after an on field collision during the Segunda Division match against Andorra on Monday.
The Tenerife squad, club staff and majority shareholder Rayco Garcia attended the funeral. RFEF president Rafael Louzan, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin were also in attendance.
De Miguel collided with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during the match on Monday and was taken to intensive care. Tenerife confirmed the death of de Miguel on Tuesday morning. The match was abandoned with the score at 2-2.
Atletico vs Barcelona Tops a Weekend Full of Title Race Meaning

The decision to play means that the biggest match of the LaLiga season so far will go ahead on Sunday, when leaders Barcelona visit second placed Atletico Madrid at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Barcelona lead the table by two points after Matchday 11, and Atletico can move top with a win in front of a home crowd.
Atletico have won the last seven league fixtures and arrive with the best defensive record in the Spanish top flight. Barcelona arrive after a 3-0 win over Aston Villa in the Champions League, but without midfielder Rodri, who is out with a hamstring injury and will miss the trip to Madrid.
Valencia against Real Madrid will be played on Saturday at Mestalla. Real Madrid sit third in the table, three points behind Barcelona, and a win would keep the pressure on the top two before the international break. The round opens on Friday, when Sevilla host Alaves.
| Team | Played | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Barcelona | 11 | 30 |
| Atletico Madrid | 11 | 28 |
