There have been suggestions that Enzo Fernandez will join Real Madrid but Moises Caicedo has confirmed his preference for the Argentine midfielder to remain at Chelsea. Fernandez’s tenure at Stamford Bridge has been a topic of discussion for some time now, particularly after his remarks in the 2025-26 season with Liam Rosenior.
It is thought to have prompted him to be dropped by Chelsea and the 25-year-old had already alluded to a transfer to the Spanish capital. Last season, the Blues were 10th in the Premier League. Real Madrid then issued a statement stating they were not in contact with regards to a move for Fernandez.
Caicedo Wants Fernandez to Stay
Caicedo has been at Chelsea since Fernandez and has said that he would prefer to keep his midfield partner at Stamford Bridge. Ecuador international thinks it would be a major boost for Chelsea to have Fernandez.
I want for him to stay, but I am not going to discuss that, if he stays here, it will be big for us,” Caicedo explained. He also spoke highly of Fernandez as a player and a person, and said that his teammate will have to make the decision that’s best for him.
Fernandez’s Impressive Season
Fernandez had a solid 2025–26 season, making 61 appearances in all competitions, which included the Club World Cup. The midfielder was the player in the Argentinean who appeared in the most games of the season for any Premier League player.
He also had 10 assists for Chelsea and 16 goals to give him a total of 26 goal contributions. Joao Pedro had more goal contributions for the club with 29.
Chelsea Could Demand £120m
But, if Fernandez was to depart Stamford Bridge, it is said the Blues would have offered around £120m to acquire the player. The midfielder has six years left on his contract with Chelsea.
Fernandez has now made 169 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, since he joined the club from Benfica in January 2023 – the club’s record deal at the time.
Caicedo Backs Fernandez to Handle Pressure
Fernandez also brought his style to the World Cup as Argentina, who played in seven matches, reached the final, with the Argentine scoring twice. Argentina went on to lose the final to Spain.
Caicedo believes Fernandez has the mentality to deal with pressure and continue performing at a high level.“He’s got a strong mentality, he’s a strong player. That’s why he’s a world champion,” Caicedo said, supporting his teammate in his pressure.
