Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has discussed the idea of bolstering their midfield before the transfer window reopens in the summer.
The Catalan giants have now looked at signing yet another midfielder after Frenkie de Jong went down with an injury in the centre of the park.
Barcelona Considering Midfield Reinforcement
Barcelona did not look to recruit midfielders at first priority earlier this summer. But, things have changed since the news about De Jong.
The Dutch midfielder has missed the World Cup due to a knee issue and is now expected to miss the early months of the 2026/27 season.
Barcelona have thus started looking for a midfield addition.
Rodri and Ounahi Among Barcelona Options
Barcelona have been in the market for a midfielder for some time and have been linked to a number of players recently.
Girona midfielder Azzedine Ounahi is one name that has been floated around and Manchester City star Rodri is also being considered for Camp Nou.
Barcelona would be a big statement to sign Rodri, but the competition to sign him is likely to be fierce.
Flick Open to New Midfielder
During his media exchange on Monday, Flick said that Barcelona are open to strengthening the squad.
The German coach admitted that Barcelona already have players who can play in midfield, but said they will be looking at the situation further during the next few weeks.
“It’s always an option to add to the team, but we have guys in that situation already, so we’ll see what happens in the next couple of weeks.”
De Jong Injury Changes Barcelona’s Plans
Barcelona’s thinking in the transfer market has definitely been affected by the lack of De Jong.
The midfielder is still a key component of Flick’s plans but will need to be replaced at the start of the new season if he is unable to return to the team.
Barcelona will now have to see if their current midfield can cope or if they need to add another experienced midfielder to the squad.
Barcelona Transfer Decision Still to Come
Barcelona have not yet confirmed whether they will sign another midfielder but for now Flick has not gone so far as to say they will definitely do so.
The club’s recruitment team is still looking into possible targets and the next few weeks will see if Barcelona will make a move.
Midfield is one of the areas to keep an eye on before the transfer window opens and several midfielders are already being targeted by the Catalan giants with De Jong unavailable.
