Why Leganés Believed in Diomande
Luhnow had already made an impression on Diomande prior to his arrival in Spain, as a video of the youngster convinced Leganés coach Borja Jiménez that they had found something special. Diomande signed in November 2024, and after training with the B team, he was given a chance to impress on an internal friendly with Jiménez. He was so good that the coach asked him to train with the first team and stressed the need for humility and professionalism.
His Explosive La Liga Breakthrough
Diomande’s first game was against Real Madrid at their Bernabéu stadium, when Leganés were trailing 3-2. He had a nervous first touch, but he then demonstrated how highly regarded he was by the coaches by dribbling past Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham to create another threat in the box. He later made his way into the last 10 games of Leganés’ season, demonstrating great confidence for a player with limited senior experience and the challenging situation of his quick move to professional football.
Diomande Quickly Became a Dribbling Sensation
Despite his brief stint in La Liga, Diomande’s statistics were impressive, showcasing his remarkable attacking ability. He had a 59% dribbling success rate and averaged 6.5 dribble attempts per 90 minutes. His ability to move the ball forward was also outstanding, with at least 10 meters of progressive carry per 90 minutes on average for wingers, and 2.3 open play chances per 90 minutes.
RB Leipzig Took the Next Big Gamble
Although Diomande was clearly a player with potential, his finishing and decision-making needed work, especially after he missed a shot at Sevilla that cost his side dearly. However, Leganés manager Jiménez thought the potential of the youngster was huge, stating that Diomande could reach the value of two or three times his €20m release clause. RB Leipzig took the risk and, in turn, Diomande was given an opportunity to take his career to the next level.
Diomande Stormed the Bundesliga
Diomande’s debut season in the Bundesliga catapulted him into the ranks of one of the most hyped young forwards in European football. He netted 12 goals and dished out eight assists, winning the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season award. His 55.4% completion rate was in the top 10% of the league, and his dribbling attempts per 90 minutes (7.7) was the highest of all players with 900+ minutes in the league.
His Numbers Show More Than Just Flair
Diomande has a game that isn’t all about his flashy dribbling like so many young attacking players. During his Bundesliga career, he had 21 take-ons while carrying the ball into the box, 29 take-ons in the box and 29 multi-player take-ons. He also made 174 progressive carries of 10 meters or more, more than any other Bundesliga player, showing his ability to use possession to create attacking pressure from the back.
Diomande Has Already Developed Impressive Decision-Making
Although he’s still a teenager, Diomande has demonstrated a willingness to make others shots for his team instead of just looking for his own. He produced 32 chances from carries to 20 shots from carries, and generated 1.9 shots per 90 minutes compared to 2.0 open-play chances created. His death was also very consistent, as he was one of the most accurate attackers in the Bundesliga with an 84% completion rate.
Why Real Madrid Spent €140 Million
Real Madrid are said to be willing to pay around €140m for Diomande, who is the club’s most expensive signing ever. The huge amount of the pay is not just for what he has accomplished, but also for what Madrid think he can do. He can play in a wide variety of attacking roles, bring in a high level of pace, close control and opportunity for others and is an interesting addition in a team with a lot of attacking talent.
Can Diomande Handle the Bernabéu Pressure?
The most important one is not whether Diomande has talent, but if he can convert that talent to the superlative requirements of Real Madrid. Success at Leganés and Leipzig doesn’t always translate to success at the Bernabéu, where expectations are much higher and every performance is looked at.
