Barcelona could be looking for another striker this summer, and Hansi Flick has admitted that Ferran Torres’ future will play a role in the club’s transfer strategy.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has acknowledged that they still have to look at a new centre forward for the 2026/27 campaign. The German coach has admitted that sporting director Deco is looking into the matter and the destiny of Ferran Torres could be a key factor in Barcelona’s next attacking signing.
Barcelona have already beefed up their front line with Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, but they still have queries about their options in the center-forward role. Flick’s squad is missing an important player in Robert Lewandowski’s absence at the end of his contract.
Torres had the best season of his Barcelona career in 2025/26, netting his 21 goals in the season. He also found the net in the World Cup final for Spain, further raising his profile ahead of the new season.
Flick Admits Barcelona Need to Act
Barcelona will have to make a decision on the striker position and Flick was asked about that and admitted they will have to make a decision.
“It’s up to the team.” “We’ll have to wait,” Flick said to reporters. “Of course I have total confidence in Deco, and we have to do something, it depends on Ferran.”
The comments suggest that Barcelona’s transfer strategy may be heavily reliant on what happens to Torres. If the Spain international is still at Camp Nou, Flick will have another seasoned player who could operate in the middle. But if he is leaving, it’s a different story altogether and it becomes much more urgent to find a new striker.
Since joining Barcelona from Manchester City in 2021, Torres has played over 200 games for the Catalan giants. His versatility in the front line has made him a useful player for Barcelona, but his future is unclear and this may impact on their recruitment plans.
Julian Alvarez Remains a Potential Target
Barcelona have been interested in Julian Alvarez before as they look for a permanent successor to Lewandowski.
The Argentina international has proven to be one of the top forwards in Europe since joining Atletico Madrid, finishing, moving and creating well. He would also be a perfect fit for Flick’s attacking system, being able to play in a central striker or as a deep player.
But Atletico Madrid have said that they’re not looking to let Alvarez go easily. Such a transfer would thus be very complex, especially in terms of finance.
Barcelona will have to look elsewhere if Atletico are not willing to make any offers.
Lamine Yamal Could Offer Another Solution
Flick also announced that Lamine Yamal may be an alternative solution in the centre of the attack.
The teen sensation has already appeared in a number of games with Barcelona, having played in various attacking positions. Flick thinks Yamal is capable of playing in the middle if needed.
“Lamine has been playing a couple of games as a false nine with us,” Flick said. “He is a great world class player and he can adjust to that.”
But Barcelona’s main intention is to play Yamal on the right wing of attack. His performances from that position have made him one of the most important players in Flick’s system and a permanent move to the centre would require another change of play.
Gordon and Adeyemi Give Flick More Options
Barcelona have already made two additions in the attacking department with Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi joining the squad this summer.
Both can play on either wing but Flick also thinks they can play as central forwards if required. Barcelona might find they can cope with injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion without having to turn to a traditional No.9 because of their versatility.

Adeyemi gives Barcelona a new attacking style, while Gordon brings energy and directness to the wings. Flick can move to the middle of the park, adding another option to his attacking arsenal.
Barcelona Await World Cup Stars
Barcelona are also waiting for a number of their World Cup-winning players to come back to pre-season training.
Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi have been extended out of the tournament and have been given extended breaks. Their return will provide Flick with a better idea of the team before games commence.
Flick has not been concerned about players being fatigued from the difficult international summer, despite reports of fatigue issues, and is confident his experienced players will be ready.

Barcelona are coming into the new season with aspirations to contest for the big trophies but Flick is aware of the need to get the balance right with the squad.
Lewandowski’s departure has left a huge void in the centre-forward position and Torres’ future may also have an impact on the club’s plans. Barcelona have plenty of choices on the wings with Gordon and Adeyemi already in the squad but may need a specialist striker.
Flick seems to be waiting on the fence for now. The club will review Torres and keep an eye on the transfer market and see if they can find a solution with existing players.
Barcelona’s attacking strategy might then be flexible through the summer. Barcelona will be looking for another proven No. 9 or will they have to rely on their flexible attacking force, Flick will have to find the right mix as the Catalan giants prepare for another tough season.
