Barcelona boss Hansi Flick has given an honest assessment of Karim Adeyemi’s first appearance while admitting Marcus Rashford has left a noticeable void at the club.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has said his side will not have Marcus Rashford, but has also said that new signing Karim Adeyemi must improve following a poor debut for the Catalan giants. The German striker featured in the first 45 minutes of Barcelona’s friendly against Birmingham City, but couldn’t make a difference as the game finished 2-2.
The teenage Egyptian attacker Hamza Abdelkarim was the star of the night for Barcelona, who had a golden opportunity to make a difference with both goals, but Adeyemi failed to do so. Adeyemi, on the other hand, was unable to make an impact and failed to show the attacking skills Barcelona are looking for in their new signing. Flick has, however, emphasised that it’s very early in the player’s adaptation to his new club.
The Birmingham friendly was just a few days after Adeyemi joined Borussia Dortmund, giving him a short time to get to know his new team mates. Flick does not see the performance as a bad thing, so he does not think that it should be looked upon in a negative sense. The Barcelona coach has already glimpsed a superior version of Adeyemi in training and thinks the forward has a lot of potential.
Flick said that some of the work he did was not that good when referring to Adeyemi’s performance. The coach said he has witnessed more in the German’s training, especially in terms of speed and finishing. Flick also said that Adeyemi is still in the early stages of his Barcelona career and has to get used to the team’s demands.
Adeyemi Has Plenty of Time to Adapt
Adeyemi’s tough first season will not be a major worry for Barcelona’s management. The forward has just joined the team and will need to get used to a new system, new team-mates and a new way of playing. Preseason games are also meant to help new players get fitter and to get a better understanding of what they are doing, rather than to give a final verdict on their ability.
One of the biggest assets of the German attacker is his speed and Barcelona will hope to find quality to be a major weapon this season. Adeyemi can line up in a variety of positions in the front line and can be used to attack against the defensive line. Flick’s versatility provides him with another option when juggling a busy schedule.
But Adeyemi has a lot of competition for regular playing time. Lamine Yamal has become Barcelona’s first choice on the right wing, while Raphinha continues to play a significant role in the attack. For this reason, Adeyemi might not be the first choice for a starter, but rather a rotation option.
His chances may be even more significant when Barcelona have a series of games to play back to back. Flick will have to change his attacking line-up with La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey games to play. Adeyemi’s energy and pace from the bench could be very useful.
Barcelona Will Miss Marcus Rashford
Flick was truthful about Adeyemi’s form but Barcelona manager also offered a powerful reminder of the impact of Marcus Rashford’s time at the club. The England international was loaned to Barcelona last season and was a crucial attacking threat for Flick.
When Barcelona lacked Yamal and Raphinha, they were able to get by with Rashford playing through the centre or from the left. He was a useful presence in the last third all season long and impressed Flick.
The Barcelona coach has confirmed he liked working with Rashford and valued his ability as a player and as a human being. Flick’s remarks also indicated that the move wasn’t just a footballing one, but one that was felt within the dressing room.
“When I speak about Marcus I can say I appreciate working with him a lot,” Flick said when talking about the former Barcelona striker. He then admitted that he and the Barcelona side would be without the England international, calling him “fantastic player” and “fantastic person”.
Adeyemi Faces Pressure to Deliver
Rashford’s departure inevitably increases the importance of Barcelona’s other attacking options. Adeyemi didn’t have to be signed as a direct replacement for Rashford, but he will give Flick another option to play wide and attack defenders at pace.
This will require Adeyemi to make the best of what he gets. The German may be given a significant role if Yamal or Raphinha are rested or injured. Those performances could make a huge difference in his ability to get more playing time.
As soon as competition starts, the pressure will increase. Preseason is a chance for players to get fit and confident, but Barcelona will demand attacking players to perform when points and trophies are on the line.
Flick Remains Confident in Adeyemi
Flick’s comments, however, were not meant to imply Barcelona have any doubts about Adeyemi’s long-term potential. Rather, the coach seems to understand that the forward should be given time to calm down before being evaluated.
Flick has already witnessed some skills in training that convinced him that Adeyemi can be a player for Barcelona. His pace, finishing and flexibility allow the team to play an attacking style that can be beneficial when facing a high line or when a team tries to press the ball.
The Birmingham game was thus just the first of Adeyemi’s Barcelona games. The forward will have more opportunities to build his understanding with his team mates and demonstrate the qualities that made the club sign him in the pre-season.
Barcelona Enter New Season Without Rashford
The signing of Adeyemi and the departure of Rashford is a significant reshuffle of Barcelona’s attacking depth for next season. Now, Flick will need to create a system that enables his current stars to continue to perform well while providing enough opportunities for new players to grow.
