Chavarría is believed to be in the sights of Chelsea as new manager Xabi Alonso is seeking to bolster the left wing after Marc Cucurella joined Real Madrid.
Chelsea Agree €25 Million Deal for Chavarría
Chelsea have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Pep Chavarría from Rayo Vallecano for approximately $28.8 million (€25 million). The fee would put the 28-year-old in the top five most expensive sales in Rayo’s history, according to reports. The Spanish side had turned down a bid of around $17.3 million, but looks poised to accept the Chelsea bid, although Chavarría has a much higher release clause.
Chavarría Emerges as Alonso’s Preferred Target
Xabi Alonso is said to be leading the way in Chelsea’s quest for Chavarría, with the Spaniard regarded as a perfect fit for Cucurella. Personal terms should not be a significant hurdle and Chavarría has not appeared in Rayo’s pre-season games, adding to the rumours that he is being readied for Stamford Bridge.
Why Chelsea Need a New Left-Back
Chelsea have been looking for a replacement for Cucurella for the left-back position since his signing for Real Madrid. Jorrel Hato was a big hit in his debut season in England but may be better suited to the center-back, where Alonso needs a more natural player on the left. Chavarría would offer experience and stability at the back and would also give Alonso more options in his system at Chelsea.
Chavarría Has Become a Reliable La Liga Fullback
After a late start to his career at the top, Chavarría has become one of the more consistent full-backs in Spanish football. He did not make his La Liga debut until the age of 24, but he had a good two seasons with Real Zaragoza and was signed by Rayo Vallecano in 2022. He has since proven himself to be an active and reliable player who can cover the entire field of play.
Rayo Vallecano Face Losing a Key Player
Rayo would not want to part with one of their most trusted players, especially one who has contributed to the club’s recent success like Chavarría. He began 29 La Liga games last season, as Rayo had a memorable season, finishing in the European qualification and qualifying for the UEFA Conference League final. He has been consistent and is a valuable addition to the squad but the offer from Chelsea may be too good to pass up.
Chavarría Could Fit Alonso’s Tactical Plans
The Spaniard could provide a lot of flexibility for Alonso in terms of his role, as he can play as a fullback or a more attacking wing-back. His work rate, experience and ability to contribute on the flank make him a useful addition to Chelsea as they start to put together the squad around their preferred style of play.
Chelsea Closing in on Another Major Defensive Addition
Chelsea have already bolstered the opposite flank with the addition of Marco Palestra, but the introduction of Chavarría would provide the Spaniard with another seasoned fullback. With the reported €25 million deal to be completed, Chelsea could get a player who can replace the experience and reliability that they lost with Cucurella and also add another key cog to their new Stamford Bridge project with Alonso.
